The Pennyrile State
Forest, owned and managed by the Kentucky Division of
Forestry, is 17,000 acres of steep, hilly, primarily
forested land with rocky bluffs and outcroppings.
Located in Christian, Hopkins and Caldwell Counties,
Pennyrile comprises a mixture of oak-hickory and pine
woodlands. Scattered throughout the Forest are old
fields, native grasslands and wildlife food plots.
The Pennyrile State Forest Resort Park (863 acres) is
located within the State Forest boundary. Several
miles of hiking trails and gravel roads traverse both
areas. Camping, food, and lodging are available on
the state park property. Also located within the
Pennyrile State Forest is 750-acre Lake Beshear and
56-acre Pennyrile Lake (located on state park property)
where waterfowl and wading birds can be observed in
addition to the woodland species found throughout the
majority of the forested landscape. This park is
also home to ruffed grouse, one of the few places in which
grouse occur in western Kentucky.
